The film has little dialogue and relies on a remarkable series of contrasts for effect: a sultry night of deep, often painful depictions of passion visualized in a stark and grainy manner against the backdrop of a spiritless, bland ...。二十世纪初年，上海林记粮行老板林威成，家大业大，妻妾成群，但仍不满足地纳了唱大鼓戏的女戏子芙蓉为妾。芙蓉念念不忘老情人张杰。两人暗地幽会，直到芙蓉产下一子，才东窗事发。林威成一怒之下，逼芙蓉上吊自尽，张杰被打成残废扔进河里。不满周岁的儿子，被扔到乱葬岗喂野狗。幸好孩子被车夫贾六发现，正巧赵婶刚生下一女，贾六拜托赵婶顺便哺育此子，为二人取名为美梦、成真。。
