农村恶霸阎大爷一妻五妾，但膝下犹虚.风水先生指农民陈大顺的田地旺子旺孙，阎大爷于是软硬兼施，强占大顺田地。阎大爷欲纳六姨太，获悉大顺女儿桂英长相标致，胁迫她下嫁。桂英本与农民何连生相恋，惟不敌阎大爷势力，只得就范。桂英嫁到阎家后受尽凌辱，苦不堪言，阎大爷更不许桂英父女见面。大顺因思念女儿，与幼子偷往阎家探望，却被发觉，更惨遭毒打至死。桂英幼弟不甘阎大爷爪牙侮辱，将他击毙，连生替他顶罪被捕。桂英知悉父亲惨死，连生被捕，悲愤填膺，伺机手刃阎大爷报仇。阎大爷将桂英殴打至昏迷，并着家丁将她淹死。连生幸运逃脱，返回村庄，救出桂英。阎大爷带领大批人马至连生家要人不果，欲杀连生家人泄愤。连生赶返救人，号召农民以解放军作后盾反抗恶霸。 南国继《珠江泪》后另一社会现实片。。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。
